A sneak peek inside the course:
1. A Gentle Introduction to Painting & Art History
July 10th, 2024
• Learn how to create your own painting inspiration folder full of beautiful images. Think botanical gardens, Renaissance masterpieces, moody dark academia vibes, whatever strikes a cord with you.
• Mini Art History Lesson: Key art movements, women artists, and the elements of design.
• Discover your painting supplies. I’ll give my recommendations, but also have you take stock of what you already have to work with so you can get started right away.
2. Still Life Co-Painting Session
July 17th, 2024
• Mini Art History Lesson: “The hierarchy of genres” and the rise of still life painting in the 17th century (with a focus on the women artists who helped to popularize the genre)
• Learn about our next project: A Still Life! We will then move into a co-painting session and create a still life together.
3. Colour & Light
July 24th, 2024
• Mini Art History Lesson: Light and Colour throughout art history; from the dramatic chiaroscuro of the Baroque to the dappled light of Impressionism.
• Work on your first project, painting together with personalized feedback and lots of nerding out over our painting techniques along the way!
4. Project 1 Showcase
July 31st, 2024
• Share your first project with the group (only if you feel comfortable!)
• We’ll discuss what we learned, and exchange gentle, constructive feedback. This will be more of a nurturing discussion space for questions and shared experiences, rather than a formal “critique” like what you would see in a traditional art school.
5. The Self
August 7th, 2024
• Mini Art History Lesson: Expressions of “The Self” throughout art history,
• Introduction to our next project: A Self Portrait!
• Painting exercise/co-painting session: Preliminary self portrait using a mirror.
6. The Poetry of Brushwork
August 14th, 2024
• Mini Art History Lesson: Brushwork and texture across art history.
• Co-painting session to experiment with brushwork and texture, or work on your self-portrait project with real-time feedback.
7. The Art of the Human Form
August 21st, 2024
• Mini Art History Lesson: The Human Figure
• My goal is to coordinate a virtual life-drawing session with a model! Hopefully I can pull it off. Either way, we will do a co-painting session focusing on the fluidity and nuances of the human form.
8. Project 2 Showcase
August 21st, 2024
• Share your second project with the group (only if you feel comfortable!)
• We’ll discuss what we learned, and exchange gentle, constructive feedback. This will be more of a nurturing discussion space for questions and shared experiences, rather than a formal “critique” like what you would see in a traditional art school.
Meet your teacher; Jodi Tellier
Hello! I’m Jodi. I am a multidisciplinary artist, educator, Mom/Dog Mom, and Red Wine Enthusiast with a passion for drawing flowers, plants, and people. I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil, and grew up always knowing that I wanted to be an artist. My business consists of providing live event calligraphy & painting for clients who value quality & artistry as much as I do, as well as teaching online courses to the best students ever.
Since starting my business in 2016, I have worked with an extensive list of clients such as Tiffany & Co, Guerlain, Diptyque, Holt Renfrew and Dior. I have taught over 500 students everything from calligraphy to drawing and painting, to how to working with luxury brands themselves. I’m so thrilled to finally be teaching a class purely about my favourite thing: making art!
My goal for this class is to help you (re)discover art as a way to care for and express yourself, to give you the tools you need to feel confident experimenting and painting intuitively, and hopefully to ignite or reignite a love and excitement for painting!
Frequently Asked Questions
+ How long do I have access to the course?
How does lifetime access sound? After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own, and including all future updates.
+ Do I need to buy any supplies?
That will depend on what exactly you already have on hand. If you currently don't own any paint at all, then you will have to invest a little bit in some basic paints and brushes. I will send my recommendations out before we start class! We will also talk about supplies in week one, so we can go over what you have on hand and see what else you might need for the class. You can definitely participate in this class with any type of paint - watercolour, acrylic, oil, gouache - even craft paint, watercolour inks, etc!
+ Will there be any live instruction / feedback or opportunity to ask questions?
Yes! Every week there will be one live lesson and one live "studio hours" session, and both will provide ample opportunity for questions and feedback. Spaces in the class will be limited to ensure that everyone can have personalized instruction!
+ Who is this course for?
This course is for both beginners and more experienced artists alike. Whether you are a beginner just starting your painting journey or a seasoned artist who just wants some accountability to get back into painting, this is the perfect place for you!
+ If I'm a total beginner, will you teach me everything I need to know from start to finish?
While I won't be doing step-by-step tutorials in this class, the exercises and discussions will give you a very well-rounded education in painting. In this class, we will be learning by doing, so you will have lots of opportunity for trial and error, experimentation, and personalized guidance from both myself and your peers.
+ Can I gift this course to someone?
Yes! Simply purchase the course, and then send me a message through the course platform letting me know the name & e-mail address of who you would like to gift the course to! I am always open to anyone who wants to donate a Scholarship spot in any of my courses.
